Hello! Tomorrow (December 5th) is the King's 81st birthday! He has been the honored and revered King of Thailand for more than 60 years. As such, tomorrow is a national holiday so we get the day off of school. It also means that today at school we have been doing many special ceremonies and activities. This morning started with the typical daily all school assembly, but it also included chanting and praying by visiting monks. All of the teachers and students offered food to the monks - all of the food/items/toiletries that monks eat or use are from the offerings of the Thai people.
Then the activities began - singing and dancing performances, Thai essay contests, art, food, etc. It is the afternoon now, and I am a bit exhausted from a morning full of walking around and talking with students/watching their many talents. But overall, wannee sanuk maak! Today is very fun!
Tomorrow, for the long weekend, I am going to Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. I will meet up with some other ETAs and we are planning a mountain biking adventure! I hear that Chiang Mai is beautiful, particularly this time of year. I will definitely pack some warm clothes, though, because it is a bit chilly in Thailand these days (especially in the North).
The political situation in Thailand has made a turn - hopefully for the better. The protestors are out of the airports, and on December 8th there will be the appointment of a new Prime Minister. I guess we will see what happens...
Well I am off to explore what else the students are up to today! (Many students are making khanoms - Thai snacks - that are very delicious!).
Till Next Time! - Kate
